Tessa had a check up at Mayo a couple weeks ago. We have so many pictures looking out this window, but the earliest one I can find of her is when she was 20 months old, even though she’s been a patient at Mayo since she was 18 days old.
This was the beginning of a very hard time for Tessa, when she was suffering from severe malnutrition and anemia. She was hospitalized and put on a supplemental formula to help her body absorb nutrients. The formula (called Peptamen Jr) did wonders for her, and she’s been on it ever since.
At this last check up her doctor thought maybe it was time to try weening her off the formula to see if her body has matured enough to be able to absorb nutrients on it’s own, which makes me both excited and nervous. What a blessing it would be to not have her on the formula anymore, knowing her body can now take nutrients from her food.
But it’s also scary to take her off of something that saved her life all those years ago.
We’ve started weening her off slowly, and she’ll be following up with a GI/nutritionist team at Mayo in a few weeks to start monitoring her as we decrease the amount of Peptamen she drinks. We are all aware of the early signs that her body isn’t getting the nutrition it needs, at which time we’ll just resume giving her a larger amount of Peptamen again. But I’m really praying we don’t get to that point. God has worked so many miracles in this little girl’s body already, that I won’t be surprised at all if we’re successfully able to stop her formula.
It was such a nice day that we had to stop and enjoy the wading fountain and take a picture with the boy and dolphin sculpture.
I really wish Rochester was this warm year round.
Next up will be a visit with the GI/nutritionist team as well as her vascular team. ๐
