I’m sure you’ve heard about people choosing a “focus word” for the year. I love this idea of choosing something to set your mind on for the coming year, to work at in different areas of your life.
My focus word for 2020 is “mindful”. Some areas in my life where I would like to be more mindful are:
1.) MY TIME.
I feel like this is the biggest area where I need to improve my mindfulness. Time is such a precious gift, as we really don’t know how much of it we have. It’s something that I take for granted, and something that I feel I often waste. In this day in age, with smart phones and social media, time management has become even more of a challenge. I love you, Pinterest and Instagram, but you are serious time killers. Are these things bad? No, but they certainly can be if I’m not mindful of how I’m spending my time. This year, I am striving to be more mindful of how I use my time, and to not waste it.
2.) MY WORDS.
Our words are so powerful. They can hurt, they can heal, they can discourage, they can build up. I hope this year my words are more positive than negative. More encouraging than discouraging. This goes especially for the words I use at home. It’s so easy to immediately get angry when the kids are fighting- listening to them yelling at each other or fighting over a toy drives me crazy and my immediate reaction is to also start yelling at them to stop yelling at each other. And then everyone’s yelling and crying and the whole situation goes up in flames. This definitely needs some mindful work on my part. My husband will be happy to know that I also hope to be more mindful in the words I say to him. He’s my punching bag, my last line of defense, my therapist at the end of a long day. And a lot of the time sometimes my words to him are not as kind as they should be. And yes, I will try to be more mindful of my nagging as well.🤦🏽♀️
3.) MY MONEY.
What I’m spending my money on is another area that is in need of some mindful attention. Less impulse buys, more thoughtful consideration of what’s really necessary. There are a lot of updates/improvements that we would like to make to our home and trips we would like to take, but being mindful of spending and saving is the only way to make them happen. I’m looking at you, Target.
Do you have a focus word for 2020? I’d love to hear it, and to pray for you as you seek to fulfill it!
