This old wood deck has been around since we’ve lived in this house- and she was pretty beat. Rusty screws were poking out, several boards were warped and splintering, and it was just kind of a sad sight. Ben has wanted to redo the deck for many years now, and the builders finished it just in time for Memorial Day. Literally just in time- they were putting on the last few pieces of railing at 7 am on Memorial Day.
One of the biggest improvements we made was adding more decking so that the hot tub is surrounded. The previous deck did not go all the way around the hot tub, and I hated how the one side was basically a 20 foot drop to the concrete below. π¬ It’s much safer now.
Apparently Tess was not impressed with the behaviors of her fellow hot tubbers.
It’s a bummer we had to use these old rickety stairs for a wedding reception last year, as they’re looking much prettier this year. π
We did add a rainscape system to keep things dry underneath the deck, which we’ll finish up next summer. But we are definitely loving splinter-free wood and brighter, sturdier railings. And of course the safer hot tub experience.

It’s definitely more relaxing, knowing that no children can fall to their death.
