The week before everything turned upside down with Corona, I mentioned to Ben about how I wished the kids would do more projects at school where they had to make things and present them. I remember doing all kinds of paper mache/ mobiles/ dioramas/ character dress ups, etc when I was in school. The only things I’ve helped my kids make for school are scarecrows, leprechaun traps, and valentines. Which I’ve loved. BUT I NEED MORE. Enter: sudden, mandatory homeschooling (I didn’t say that I wanted to teach my kids everything all the time…just a little diy project every now and then…but whatever). So we decided to finally tackle those projects. I let each kid choose a topic they wanted to learn more about and what they wanted to make to go with it.Claire chose the solar system, and wanted to make a mobile to go with it. Max chose volcanoes, mostly because he wanted to make something explode. Grace wanted to research an animal, so we looked at a bunch before she settled on a fennec fox. A few days later, she was playing in her room and found a stuffed animal fennec fox that we didn’t even realize she had! She was so excited. She thought making a diorama about where the fennec fox lives sounded perfect.
Everyone loved helping Max with the paper mache volcano. When they were finished, they set up their stations and told us about their topic.
These projects were actually a lot of fun and involved many skills: researching, reading, writing, creating, and speaking. And I finally got to help with some hands on school projects. That I also get to grade.
